Access:
From Winthrop drive the West Chewuch Road north about 20 miles to
Camp Four Campground. Cross the bridge on Forest Service Road 5110.
In 0.5 miles turn left on FS Road 700. Drive 2.0 miles to the trailhead.
Route
Description: The first 0.5 miles of trail is on the old
road bed. The trail begins in timber and maintains a steady uphill
climb as it ascends the valley of Honeymoon Creek. The upper portion
of the trail is above timberline.
Highlights:
The two buildings on top are a study in comparative history. A modern
lookout tower stands next to its 1920's counterpart - an old log
cabin groundhouse. This lookout site is no longer staffed though
it has a commanding view of the upper Chewack drainage. One can
see the First Butte Lookout to the south, which is still in operation.
Specific
Hazards/Difficulties: The trail is open to mountain bikes,
but due to its steepness it should be considered a "most difficult"
route. The trail has a southern exposure and can be hot and dry
in the summer. Be sure to carry water or obtain it before the halfway
point. There is a small spring 0.5 miles north of the summit
Restrictions: No motorized vehicles.
Trailhead
Facilities: Hitch rail, limited parking.
